United We Stand Divided We Fall
How the United States 2020 Election seems to be going hand in hand with the year and its unrelenting pursue to surprise us.
November 3rd, Election Day 2020. With the Coronavirus pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement, and having a historical Election. This year has been like no other.
The last four years the United States has been a very divided country, strictly separated by those that support Democratic views and those that support Republican views. The people that fall in between seem to be falling through the cracks. Four college age women, two Democrats and two Republicans viewpoints seem to be as divided as the country. Erin Radack, 19 a Liberal Democrat stated whether or not her viewpoints mirror those of her parents. “Yes and no, I live in a split household but as a lesbian woman my conservative father also supports LGBTQ rights.”
Julianna Taylor, 21, “My family is very conservative, Pro-Life.” But her views on LGBTQ rights stated, “I have friends in the LGBTQ community, and I support them being happy.”
In a survey sent to SUNY Brockport college students about political affiliation they selected the following:
39.3% selected the Independent party as their best representation.
32.1% selected the Republican party as their best representation.
28.6% selected the Democrat party as their best representation.
With the current election results the President-Elect is Joe Biden, when looking at this chart above it shows how division among the 30 male and female college students. 32.1% of the male and females in the survey are assumed to support Pro-Life views, that is what their Republican Representation supports. President Donald Trump was the only choice on election ballots that is Pro-Life, Trump supports overturning the law of Roe v Wade which makes abortion legal in the United States (ProCon, 2019).
Erin Radack, 19 (Democrat), Erin Lant, 19 (Democrat) responded to being Pro-Life/Pro-Choice stating, “It is your body, it should be your choice.” That statement showing that they both support the Pro-Choice view on abortion. Their political representative being Joe Biden, these women both agree with his view that Pro-Choice is a right all women deserve in the United States.(PBS, 2019)
A view of the United States current President Donald Trump is that white supremacy is not a problem in the country. In an article published by NPR, author Sarah McCamon wrote of Trump’s hesitation to denounce white supremacy. When asked in the Presidential Debate Trump stated, “Proud Boys, stand back and stand by.”
Views on Gay Marriage:
Erin Radack, 19 (Democrat):
“I am for gay marriage, as a lesbian woman I feel it is my right to choose who I marry.”
Julianna Taylor, 21 (Republican):
“I have many friends in the LGBTQ community and I support them being happy.”
Erin Lant, 19 (Democrat):
“Anyone can marry whoever they want, no one should be able to question that.”
Nina Koch, 21 (Republican):
“As an Orthodox Christion I do not support gay marriage. However, I have a lot of gay friends and I am not going to tell them they’re going to hell, that would be extremely un-Christian of me, but I can’t support it.”
Nina Koch stated above, in her religion it is not their way of life to support gay marriage but she feels it is un-Christian to condemn someone who chooses to marry who they love. These questions difficult as they may be, they are questions that have made the country so divided.
Is it the persons upbringing to blame?
Erin Lant, 19 (Democrat), “I believe our parents political views affect our own because it is how they raise you and what they exposed you to growing up. All of these experiences made us into who we are today.”
Thomas Jefferson once said, “All men are created equal: that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Words the people of the United States should remember in these divided times.
